Delhi Police is responsible for leaking information to media: Asif Iqbal Tanha

Asif Iqbal Tanha, a student of Jamia Millia Islamia University and an accused in Delhi riots case said that when he was in custody, his bail plea was pending and even the charge sheet was not filed, the news channels showed his disclosure statement on prime time. Asif Iqbal Tanha has added that the Delhi Police is solely responsible for leaking information about him to the media. Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court has deferred the hearing to October 1 2021.

New Delhi: Asif Iqbal Tanha, a student of Jamia Millia Islamia University and an accused in Delhi riots case said that when he was in custody, his bail plea was pending and even the charge sheet was not filed, the news channels showed his disclosure statement on prime time. Asif Iqbal Tanha has added that the Delhi Police is solely responsible for leaking information about him to the media. Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court has deferred hearing to October 1, 2021.

On Wednesday, Asif Iqbal Tanha's lawyer Vijay Aggarwal ended the argument on behalf of his client. Delhi Police's lawyer, Aman Lekhi will present the counter-arguments on October 1. Vijay Agarwal said that after the order of Justice Vibhu Bakhru in July, the Delhi Police did not issue any press statement in this regard. We cannot turn a blind eye to the leaking of information by the Delhi Police and other agencies.

He further said that on August 18 2020, when Tanha's bail application was pending, news channels were showing the disclosure statement on prime time on that day. The media was saying that Tanha has confessed. However, till August 18 2020, Delhi Police had not filed any charge sheet. In such a situation, only Delhi Police is responsible for leaking information. Agarwal also said that on August 19 2020, he had complained to the DCP, but no action was taken.

According to Delhi Police, Tanha is a member of the Student Islamic Organization. He lives in Abul Fazal Enclave of Shaheen Bagh. He is an important member of the Jamia Coordination Committee, through which the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act were promoted. Tanha is a close associate of Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, Meeran Haider and Safoora Zargar. Tanha is currently out on bail.
