New Delhi: The Delhi government has decided against the use of old vehicles in the National Capital Region, taking pollution and the order of the Supreme Court in the matter into account. According to latest decision, 10-year-old diesel vehicles and 15-year-old petrol vehicles won't be allowed to operate on the roads of Delhi-NCR. In this regard, the Delhi government has also issued a public advertisement citing is a ban on running old vehicles.
The public advertisement by the Delhi Government cited the National Green Tribunal (NGT) order on 7 April 2015 on this issue. The Supreme Court has also issued a similar order on 29 October 2018.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had also said in its order that vehicles can be confiscated for violating this direction. This order is also being linked with the recently introduced Vehicle Scrappage Policy issued by the Central Government.
Under this policy, a private vehicle will have to undergo an automated fitness test after 20 years and a commercial vehicle after 15 years. A heavy fine will be imposed for driving vehicles that do not pass this test and such vehicles will be confiscated. Unfit vehicles will be sent to scrap under the scrappage policy.
Option for old vehicle owners
The vehicle owners are advised to scrap the vehicles that are beyond the permissible age limit. For this, the Transport Department has prepared a list of authorised scrapping agencies where old vehicles can be scrapped. According to new government order, old vehicles will be seized if they are found running on the roads of Delhi and action will be taken under the Motor Vehicle Act 1988.
