Fani is billed as the most severe cyclonic storm since the super cyclone of 1999 that claimed close to 10,000 lives and left a trail of destruction in vast swathes of Odisha, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Centre. After crossing Odisha, the cyclone is likely to move towards West Bengal before tapering off. It is, however, still likely to impact parts of the northeast, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
Citing the intensity of the extremely severe cyclone 'Fani,' the Indian Navy and Coast Guard joined hands to prepare for the cyclone's landfall. The Indian Navy has positioned ships carrying relief materials and engaged choppers on surveillance sorties for warning fishermen not to venture into the sea. Radar stations along the coast have been issuing warnings in vernacular languages.
Indian Navy Public Relation Officer Captain D K Sharma told ANI that three ships have been put to sea that is carrying relief materials and items as well as medicines. Also they have kept six wing aircraft helicopters ready in Visakhapatnam naval air base INS Dega, so the help would be available on the shortest notice." At least 19 districts of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal are likely to be affected by 'extremely severe' cyclonic storm 'Fani.' The cyclone is expected to make landfall 10km north of Chandrabhaga in Puri district on Friday afternoon.
