West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said all precautionary steps, including evacuation of people from coastal areas, have been taken to deal with any eventuality arising out of cyclone Amphan, which is fast approaching the the state.

Teams of disaster management department, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Relief Force (SDRF) have been sent to the vulnerable areas, she said.

"We will be monitoring the situation for cyclone Amphan 24X7. Chief Secretary Rajiva Sinha, Home Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay and the secretary of disaster management department will be keeping a close watch on the situation," Banerjee told reporters at the state secretariat.

Cyclone 'Amphan' may cause extensive damage on Bengal coast during landfall: Govt

Cyclone 'Amphan' has developed into a super cyclone in the Bay of Bengal on Monday and has the potential to cause extensive damage in the coastal districts of West Bengal when it makes landfall on Wednesday, the government said.

The cyclone is expected to make landfall on the West Bengal coast in the afternoon of May 20 as an extremely severe cyclonic storm with wind speeds ranging up to 195 kmph.

The cyclone has the potential to cause extensive damage in the coastal districts of West Bengal, an official statement said.

'Amphan' will cause heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the coastal districts of West Bengal, it added.

The districts of East Medinipur, South and North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly and Kolkata in are likely to be worst affected due to 'Amphan'.

The storm is also likely to impact the coastal districts of north Odisha, including Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Bhadrak and Balasore.

The India Meteorological Department has warned of a storm surge of a height of about four-six metres above the astronomical tide, which would inundate the low-lying coastal areas of South and North 24 parganas, and three-four metres in East Medinipur at the time of landfall, the statement said.

High alert in coastal areas as cyclone Amphan gradually entering West Bengal. The helpline number issued by disaster management and CISF is 1070.

East Midnapur district also issued an helpline number i.e 9073939804. these helpline numbers will work 24/7. Also govt started miking to alert people about the cyclone situation. If needed, people will be evacuted from Sundarban coastal area and will be relocated in flood centers.

Cyclone Amphan: 13 Kerala districts under yellow alert

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday predicted heavy rains in Kerala on account of the extremely severe cyclonic storm 'Amphan' over west central and adjoining central parts of South Bay of Bengal moving north-north westwards, following which the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) placed 13 of the 14 districts under yellow alert.

Yellow alert means people and authorities have to be cautious as heavy rainfall can be expected. Only the capital district has been left out from the yellow alert on Monday.

For Tuesday, the yellow alert is in nine districts. The IMD has predicted 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm rain in 24 hours.

Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea. The SDMA has asked people living in areas that has history of landslides and landslips and those living near river banks and in coastal areas to be on watch out.

The SDMA has warned of winds blowing at 45-55 km, besides lighting and thunder. This warning will remain effective till May 22.

Amphan turns Super Cyclone, Odisha initiates evacuation

Cyclone 'Amphan' intensified into a super cyclonic storm on Monday and is likely to move across the northeast Bay of Bengal, and cross the West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts between Digha and the Hatia island on May 20, the IMD said.

"Amphan" (pronounced UM-PN) that had turned into an extremely severe cyclonic storm gathered more strength over the Bay of Bengal while moving slowly towards the coast. It has now intensified further into a super cyclonic storm, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

It is likely to move north-northeastwards and fast across the northwest Bay of Bengal, and cross the West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts between Digha and the Hatia island as a very severe cyclonic storm, the department said.

This has raised the likelihood of heavy rains and high-velocity winds in coastal Odisha and the state government has initiated the process of evacuating people from the vulnerable areas. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea till May 21, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) P K Jena said.

37 NDRF teams to combat dual challenge of cyclone 'Amphan', COVID-19: DG

The NDRF has enhanced its strength to a total of 37 teams, with the addition of 20 more, to combat the 'dual challenge' of cyclone 'Amphan' amid the coronavirus pandemic, the chief of the federal contingency force said on Monday.

S N Pradhan, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF)Director General, said the force is fully geared with all the equipment and paraphernalia to face the "developing situation which the Indian Meteorological Department has said will turn into a very severe cyclonic storm by this evening and continue to be so for sometime".

"A total of 37 teams have been deployed by NDRF in West Bengal and Odisha, out of which 20 teams are actively deployed and 17 are on standby in the two states," Pradhan said in a video message.

On Sunday, the force had earmarked 17 teams for the task.

A single NDRF team has a strength of about 45 personnel.

In Odisha, the deployment of the force is in seven districts and in West Bengal in six districts, the DG said.

'Amphan' likely to intensity further into super cyclone: IMD

Cyclone 'Amphan' intensified into an extremely severe storm on Monday and is all set to unleash heavy rains coupled with high-velocity winds in coastal Odisha, prompting the state government to prepare for the possible evacuation of 11 lakh people.

The extremely severe cyclonic storm 'Amphan', moving with a speed of 13 kmph over west-central and adjoining central parts of south Bay of Bengal, is likely to gain more strength and intensify further into a super cyclonic storm in the next 12 hours, the IMD said.

The high-velocity winds may cause extensive damage to mud houses and partial damage to 'pucca' structures, it said.

The winds may also lead to bending or uprooting of power and communication poles, minor disruption of railways and may affect overhead power lines and signalling systems and also cause widespread damage to standing crops, plantations, orchards, the IMD said.

Amphan lays centred around 790 km south of Paradip in Odisha, 940 km south-southwest of Digha in West Bengal and 1060 km south-southwest of Khepupara in Bangladesh, said H R Biswas, Director of the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar.

It is very likely to move north-northeastwards across northwest Bay of Bengal and cross West Bengal Bangladesh coasts between Digha in West Bengal and Hatiya Islands in Bangladesh during the afternoon or evening of May 20 as a very severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 155-165 kmph gusting to 185 kmph, he said.

'Cyclone warning cage no 2' hoisted in Rameswaram

Pamban port authorities have hoisted 'cyclone warning cage number 2' at Pamban bridge, in view of very severe cyclonic storm 'Amphan'.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the storm will intensify further into an 'Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm'.

Around 50 boats of fishermen have been damaged in Rameswaram following the thunderstorm and rainfall which hit parts of the state last night.

NDRF officials warn people to not to go near sea in WB's East Midnapore

Teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed ahead of Cyclone Amphan, which is likely to make landfall in between Sagar Island (West Bengal) and Hatiya Islands (Bangladesh) on May 20.

2nd BN NDRF officials made announcements to warn locals in West Bengal's East Midnapore. They warned people to not to go to the sea and not to walk near coastal areas.

Office of the Special Relief Commissioner Odisha said that concerned government departments and 12 coastal and adjoining districts have been alerted and advised to undertake required measures in the backdrop impending danger from cyclone Amphan.

"Concerned departments of the government and 12 coastal and adjoining districts (Gajapati, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Puri, Khordha, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore and Mayurbhanj) have been alerted and they have been advised to undertake required preparedness measures to effectively handle the disaster. Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur districts have been instructed to remain fully prepared," read a press release from Office of the Special Relief Commissioner, Odisha.

" 20 teams of Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), 17 teams of National Disaster Response(NDRF) and 335 units of Fire and Disaster Management are in readiness to be pressed into service. 10 NDRF teams and 15 ODRAF units have been pre-positioned in 6 coastal and 4 nearby districts. Further deployment is being planned," the press release added.

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that Very Severe Cyclonic Storm 'Amphan' over central parts of South Bay of Bengal is going to intensify into Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm in the next six hours.

"Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS) 'Amphan' over central parts of South Bay of Bengal near latitude 12.5 degrees north and longitude 86.4 degrees East, about 870 km nearly south of Paradip (Odisha) to intensify further into an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm in the next six hours," IMD said in a tweet on Monday.

"To cross West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts between Digha(WB) and Hatiya island in afternoon/evening of May 20 as VSCS," it further said.

A dangerous thunderstorm and lightning alert has been issued for Jhumpura, Keonjhar, Patna, Saharpada and Champua block by Keonjhar district; Sukruli, Raruan and Karajia blocks of Mayurbhanj district, by Special Relief Organisation of the Odisha government.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has sent its 10 teams to Odisha and seven teams to West Bengal in view of the approaching Cyclone Amphan.

While the NDRF teams have been deployed in West Bengal's South 24 Pragnas, North 24 Pragnas, east and West Midnapore, Howrah and Hooghly, they have been sent to Odisha's Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Balasore, Jajpur, Bhadrak, and Mayurbhanj.

The NDRF is monitoring the situation and working with states and their disaster management teams, and the IMD.

Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Amphan over central parts of South Bay of Bengal moved north-northeastwards during past 6 hours, intensified into Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm & lay centred at 0230 hrs today over central parts of South Bay of Bengal & adjoining central Bay of Bengal, informed IMD.

It's very likely to move north-northeastwards & move fast across northwest Bay of Bengal & cross West Bengal – Bangladesh coasts between Digha (West Bengal) and Hatiya Islands (Bangladesh) during afternoon/evening of 20th May as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm.

'Cyclone warning cage no 2' hoisted in Rameswaram

Pamban port authorities have hoisted 'cyclone warning cage number 2' at Pamban bridge, in view of very severe cyclonic storm 'Amphan'.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the storm will intensify further into an 'Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm'.

Around 50 boats of fishermen have been damaged in Rameswaram following the thunderstorm and rainfall which hit parts of the state last night.

Meanwhile, the Office of the Special Relief Commissioner Odisha on Sunday said that concerned government departments and 12 coastal and adjoining districts have been alerted and advised to undertake required measures in the backdrop impending danger from cyclone Amphan.

NDRF officials warn people to not to go near sea in WB's East Midnapore

Teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed ahead of Cyclone Amphan, which is likely to make landfall in between Sagar Island (West Bengal) and Hatiya Islands (Bangladesh) on May 20.

2nd BN NDRF officials made announcements to warn locals in West Bengal's East Midnapore. They warned people to not to go to the sea and not to walk near coastal areas.

12 coastal, adjoining districts on alert in Odisha

Office of the Special Relief Commissioner Odisha said that concerned government departments and 12 coastal and adjoining districts have been alerted and advised to undertake required measures in the backdrop impending danger from cyclone Amphan.

"Concerned departments of the government and 12 coastal and adjoining districts (Gajapati, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Puri, Khordha, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore and Mayurbhanj) have been alerted and they have been advised to undertake required preparedness measures to effectively handle the disaster. Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur districts have been instructed to remain fully prepared," read a press release from Office of the Special Relief Commissioner, Odisha.

" 20 teams of Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), 17 teams of National Disaster Response(NDRF) and 335 units of Fire and Disaster Management are in readiness to be pressed into service. 10 NDRF teams and 15 ODRAF units have been pre-positioned in 6 coastal and 4 nearby districts. Further deployment is being planned," the press release added.

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that Very Severe Cyclonic Storm 'Amphan' over central parts of South Bay of Bengal is going to intensify into Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm in the next six hours.

"Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS) 'Amphan' over central parts of South Bay of Bengal near latitude 12.5 degrees north and longitude 86.4 degrees East, about 870 km nearly south of Paradip (Odisha) to intensify further into an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm in the next six hours," IMD said in a tweet on Monday.

"To cross West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts between Digha(WB) and Hatiya island in afternoon/evening of May 20 as VSCS," it further said.

A dangerous thunderstorm and lightning alert has been issued for Jhumpura, Keonjhar, Patna, Saharpada and Champua block by Keonjhar district; Sukruli, Raruan and Karajia blocks of Mayurbhanj district, by Special Relief Organisation of the Odisha government.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has sent its 10 teams to Odisha and seven teams to West Bengal in view of the approaching Cyclone Amphan.

While the NDRF teams have been deployed in West Bengal's South 24 Pragnas, North 24 Pragnas, east and West Midnapore, Howrah and Hooghly, they have been sent to Odisha's Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Balasore, Jajpur, Bhadrak, and Mayurbhanj.

The NDRF is monitoring the situation and working with states and their disaster management teams, and the IMD.
