New Delhi: Delhi Crime Branch has arrested Salman alias Chand Babu- an accused in connection with Delhi riots in February 2020-from Bulandshahr on Monday. He is accused of 5 criminal cases registered in connection with the Delhi riots and was absconding. Police was searching for him for the last 1 year.
DCP Rajesh Dev said "the Crime Branch was looking for him in connection with Delhi riots. We got a tip that Mohammad Salman-a resident of North Ghonda, involved in many riots and has been declared a fugitive by the court- is hiding in Bulandshahr. Following the tip, Inspector Jaiprakash's team under the supervision of ACP Manoj Dixit raided Bulandshahr and arrested the 29-year-old Salman alias Chand Babu from the Civil Lines."
Salman informed the police that he was offended by the CAA and NRC bill. He felt the law was against the Muslim community and he would be sent out of India. Meanwhile, a demonstration against the bill was going on across the national capital. On 24 February, people of the Muslim community gathered at Ghonda and demonstrated against the bill. They ransacked the surroundings and damaged the property of the others. They also set many shops and houses on fire.
Salman's name came to light after police examined CCTV footage and recorded the statements of other accused in the riot case. Police had registered five cases against him in Jaffrabad police station.
Crime Branch stated they will hand him over to Jaffrabad police.
