New Delhi: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) opposed the government order bringing online news portals and content providers within the ambit of Information and Broadcasting Ministry.

A notification signed by the President of India was issued on Monday according to which news on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram will also come under government regulations now.

All these platforms were earlier under the Ministry of Information and Electronic Technology and subject to various provisions under that IT Act to deal with digital platforms and intermediaries.

“This notification is a clear expression of intent that the Central government is now moving to regulate digital media content. Having muzzled the print and electronic/visual media to a considerable extent, it is moving to control digital media” said the statement released by the CPIM on Thursday.

The CPI(M) believes that the existing laws and IT Act are adequate for the purpose of healthy media, it added.

Digital Media so far was unregulated as there was no law governing the digital news media or other content platforms. First-time government has brought Digital media under government rules and regulations issuing an order.
