New Delhi: The centre has decided to extend the geographical area of the existing Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) in Assam besides carving out Bodo Cachari Autonomous Council from the state to appease four groups of Bodo militant outfits.
The proposed council will get the official nod following an accord that will be signed at the Home Ministry on Monday.
Disclosing this to ETV Bharat, Gambaru Mushahary vice president of United Bodo Peoples Organisation said that the proposed council will comprise more than 10 lakh Bodos living in 21 districts across Assam.
"We have demanded that the funding pattern of the council should be directly from the Centre," said Mushahary.
The new Bodo Cachar Autonomous Council will come under the State Act.
It may be mentioned that Assam already has an existing Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) in place under 6th Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
"We hope that with this accord, the long-standing demand for the protection of language, culture, political right of the Bodos living outside BTC area will come into reality," said Mushahary.
Home Minister Amit Shah, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and senior officials of the central and state government will be present in the accord signing ceremony.
It may be mentioned here that several non-Bodo organisations in Assam called for a bandh opposing the accord.
