Delhi Police to look into lathi-charge allegations by anti-CAA protesters in Hauz Rani

Delhi Police has said that it is looking into allegations of lathi-charge on protestors who were taking out an anti-CAA march in Hauz Rani area of Malviya Nagar.

Delhi Police Commissioner (South) Atul Thakur on Sunday said that that the police will look into allegations of lathi-charge adding that the protest march was organised without permission.  

"Protesters tried to block traffic at multiple locations. Some of them verbally and physically abused police personnel and pushed female police personnel towards barricades," Thakur said.

Clash erupts between pro and anti CAA groups in Jaffrabad, sit-ins continue in many places in Delhi

Protests, which mirrored the Shaheen Bagh sit-in where demonstrators have blocked a road since December, started in Khureji Khaas in Karawal Nagar and Chandbagh in northeast Delhi, and Hauz Rani in South Delhi , prompting the police to step up security.

A group of anti-CAA protestors, who have been on a sit-in at Gandhi Park in south Delhi's Hauz Rani since last one month, took out a march towards the main road.

Delhi Police personnel later stopped the pro-CAA protestors when they tried to march towards Kardampuri where another anti-CAA protest was on. The security personnel formed a human-chain to separate the groups and defuse tension.

A man, whose identity is yet to be ascertained, sustained injuries in police firing after an anti-CAA protest allegedly turned violent in Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh.  

The police resorted to firing and lobbing tear gas shells after stones were reportedly pelted at vehicles carrying Rapid Action Force personnel.

Meanwhile, several roadside shops were gutted during anti-CAA protest, apart from destruction of a number of vehicles during stone pelting. 

RAF resorted to tear gas shells in order to disperse the crowd.  

Fire tenders have reached the spot and are trying to douse the fire.

In opposition to anti-CAA protests at Shaheen Bagh, a group of residents from Jasola Vihar, an area close to the protest site, staged a sit-in demonstration in their area demanding the removal of the apparent roadblock caused by the protest.

"These people are protesting to protect their rights, and we do not mind it. What we have a problem with is the traffic congestion, " Rekha told ETV Bharat.

Another protester Bunty said, "We have been waiting for the past 70 days. If they want to protest they can go and sit at Ramlila maidan."

Hundreds of people on Sunday gathered in Delhi's Chand Bagh area to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) National Population Register (NPR), and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC).  The protesters were holding placards and the national flag. They were planning to march from Chand Bagh to Rajghat.

This came after hundreds of people gathered in Jaffrabad, another Muslim-dominated locality closeby, on Saturday evening to protest against CAA and NRC.

The entry and exit gates of Jaffrabad metro station were closed on Sunday after an overnight protest by around 500 people, mostly women, against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the National Register of Citizens.

The women, carrying the tricolour and raising slogans of 'aazadi', said they would not move from the site till the Centre revoke the CAA.

They had blocked road no. 66 which connects Seelampur with Maujpur and Yamuna Vihar.

"Entry & exit of Jaffrabad have been closed. Trains will not be halting at this station," the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation tweeted.

Mobile internet services suspension extended till Monday midnight at Aligarh

New Delhi: People on Sunday evening continued to protest at Jaffrabad metro station area, against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), that has been going on since last night.

A number of Bhim Army activists also joined the agitation earlier today.

The protesters, a majority of them women, were seen holding the national flag and raising slogans against CAA.

A few protesters were seen holding placards that read, "You can block internet but not our spirits" and "When injustice strikes, silence is a sin".

Over 1,000 women gathered at the metro station and sat on a dharna on the road which connects Seelampur to Maujpur and Yamuna Vihar on Saturday night

Earlier in the day, the exit and entry gates of Jaffrabad metro station were closed, and heavy security has been deployed at the agitation site.

Meanwhile, police have been deployed in Maujpur area where stones were pelted between two groups earlier today. 

This comes amidst mediation attempts at the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) protest site at Shaheen Bagh, which has become the epicentre of resistance against the Citizenship act.

The Shaheen Bagh protesters have already told the Supreme Court-appointed interlocutors that if the road parallel to the anti-CAA protest site was opened, the apex court should pass an order ensuring their security.

In December last year, thousands of protesters holding placards and national flags gathered at Jaffrabad metro station raised slogans against the Act, which seeks to grant citizenship to refugees from Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist and Parsi communities fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh who entered India on or before 31, 2014.
