New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited heads of all political parties which have at least one MP either in the Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha for a meeting on Wednesday to discuss the "One Nation, One Election" and some other important matters.
However, experts believe that the opposition will not stand with the government on this decision.
The debate has been going on around the country regarding the idea and one might think that the idea is new but the Bharatiya Matdata Sangathan, a non-political NGO devoted to enriching democratic values in the Indian democracy has been raising the issue for the past several years.
Speaking to ETV Bharat, Bharatiya Matdata Sangathan president Rikhab Chand Jain strongly felt that all the parties should agree to the idea of 'One Nation, One Election'.
At the same time, Jain said, "The idea is very attractive and has several advantages but, the biggest impediment in its implementation is constitutional provision relating to no-confidence motion and related issues."
However, the prudency of the policy of ‘one nation, one election’ comes from the fact that it would be a great advantage to the government treasury if simultaneous elections for Lok Sabha and state assemblies are held because a lot of money and manpower is used in conducting elections and simultaneous elections would save a lot of money and manpower. Also, it is expected that the number and percentage of voters actually coming out of their houses to vote would increase if simultaneous elections are held. These advantages would benefit the country as a whole.
Thus, it is expected that parties would weigh the nation’s good over their own good and support the policy of ‘one nation, one election’ in favour of the common good of the whole country.
