People should be free to choose life partner: Experts

Bilaspur: Institution of marriage has been under tremendous stress of late for various reasons. Experts believe that love marriages, contrary to popular belief that they do not work beyond a point, were doing better as compared to the arranged ones.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, families force their young ones for marriages without their consent and these very marriages develop all sorts of problems later in life.

An ETV Bharat team interacted with experts on the issue to find out problems concerning the marriages in India.

Senior advocate Nirupama Vajpayee, who handles such cases every day, said more cases related to arranged marriages come to courts. The belief that more problems arise in love marriages has proved wrong as arranged marriages are resulting in more issues.

She said as arranged marriages are solemnised under family pressure, they lead to problems.

It's said that when we have the right to vote after attaining a certain age then why don't we have the right to chose our partners.

Senior social worker Satyabhama Awasthi believes that caste-based panchayats are a major issue. Two people are married without their consent as sons and daughters are emotionally attached with their parents, they get blackmailed into marriages which do not have their consent.

This leads to stress in the marriage, she said.

Awasthi said the people should be given the right to chose their life partner.

Dr Vinay Pathak, supporting the idea of the right to chose, puts a condition, saying the two should also have the ability to assess each other. For that experience of elders in the family is very useful.

Psychiatrist Dr Ashutosh Tiwari said forced marriages result in mental tension which could lead to a difficult situation.

Young people also said that they should be given the freedom to chose their life partner.
