Raipur: Amid the rising threat of COVID-19, Assistant Nurse Superintendent Abhilasha Gujrati of Mekahara Hospital in Raipur burned the midnight oil by working in the Covid ward trying to save as many lives as possible.

Abhilasha comes from a traditional family, where girls are not much educated and are married off at an early age. It was difficult for her to rise above this background and get training in nursing. After completing schooling from Korba, Abhilasha decided to serve in the medical field to fulfil her father's wish.

Narrating her ordeal to ETV Bharat, Abhilasha said, ''Covid-19 is a new disease. Nobody knew anything about its treatment. I am working in Makahara Hospital, but I was assigned duty in Raipur AIIMS. No special training was done. The staff of Raipur AIIMS was extremely supportive. My husband has a private job and I had to leave my young children back home, that too for 28 days. During that time, I had 14 days of duty and 14 days of isolation.''

''When I was assigned the duty in the Covid ward, I was scared. My family members were also very nervous, but I was glad that I was going to a good place. I will get to learn something new. It was a big challenge to take care of myself and handle the family. My family members were very supportive, but I was also afraid that if I go back home, my family should not face any problem, so it was right to remain in isolation.'' said Abhilasha.

"Covid-19 was a new disease for everyone. Even if the patients had a mild cold and cough, they would be petrified. They would not speak to the medical staff. Hence, it was extremely difficult to understand how they were feeling. They did not want to understand and believe that they had contracted the infection," she said.

Assistant Nurse Superintendent further said: "It has been proven time and again that women never give up easily. People must have seen a case in Bihar, where a girl set out on her bicycle with her father. Many of our nurses came forward to do their duty, leaving behind their infants at home. We all felt that we should defeat COVID-19. We will not be afraid and together we will keep beating Coronavirus until we rout it out from the country."

Abhilasha has broken all the shackles of society and is setting an example for many women to come forward and fight the battle against the virus.
