Nitish Kumar set to be sworn in as Bihar CM for 7th time

Nitish Kumar will be the Chief Minister of Bihar for the seventh time as he was elected unanimously the leader of National Democratic Alliance. He will be taking oath as the 37th CM of Bihar on Monday.

Patna: The final preparations are on for the formation of the 17th term of Bihar legislative assembly as the 2020 elections have given the mandate to the NDA.

At the legislature party meeting of the NDA, Nitish Kumar was unanimously elected the leader of the NDA.

Kumar also met the governor to stake his claim to form the government and presented him with the consent letter of the majority MLAs.

After meeting the governor, Kumar met representatives of the media and said that the governor has received the consent letter of MLAs and has appointed him as the Chief Minister-designate.

He will take the oath of office on Monday evening. He said that the names of his cabinet colleagues would be announced shortly.

Nitish Kumar is a seasoned politician who has earned the sobriquet of ‘Chanakya’ in Bihar. He has been able to win the confidence of people through social engineering.

Kumar is going to be the Chief Minister for the record seventh time as he will be taking oath as the 37th CM of Bihar.

He had also been the 29th, 31st, 32nd, 34th, 35th and 36th Chief Minister of the state prior to this.

Kumar, a socialist leader, is considered a mature leader. This time, during the election campaign, he had said that this was his last election.

“This is my last election, give me a chance,” he had appealed to the people.

Born in a Kurmi family in 1951, Nitish Kumar completed graduation in mechanical engineering from the Patna Engineering College.

His political gurus were Jayprakash Narayan, Ram Manohar Lohia, Karpoori Thakur and George Fernandes.

He was married on February 22, 1973, to Manju Kumari Sinha, an engineer by profession. Nitish Kumar has one son who is a graduate from the Birla Institute of Technology.

Enters Politics In 1977

Nitish Kumar entered politics in 1977 by contesting Bihar assembly election on Janata Party ticket. He was elected to the Bihar assembly in 1985.

Kumar’s political clout increased when he became the Bihar unit president of Yuva Lok Dal in 1987.

He was made the general secretary of Bihar Janata Dal in 1989.

The year 1989 gave Kumar a big break in politics as he was elected to the 9th Lok Sabha. This was his first term as a Member of Parliament.

Kumar then went on to become the Union Minister for agriculture and cooperatives, a position he held from April to November 1990.

He was elected to the Lok Sabha again in 1991. He became the general secretary of Janata Dal (United) and the deputy leader of the JDU in the Lok Sabha.

In 1993, he was appointed chairman of the agriculture committee.

In 1998, Kumar was elected to the 12th Lok Sabha.

He was also the Railway minister from 1998 to 1999. He won the 13th Lok Sabha election after which he was made the Union Agriculture Minister.

At The Helm Of Bihar government

The year 2000 saw an important turn in the political career of Nitish Kumar when for the first time he became the Chief Minister of Bihar. However, his tenure was just for eight days as he had held the position from March 3, 2000, to March 10.

He again became Union Agriculture Minister. He was given the additional charge of Railway minister in 2001. He was the Railway minister from 2001 to 2004.

He was then elected to the 14th Lok Sabha in 2004.

In 2005, Kumar once again became the Chief Minister. He took oath as the 31st chief minister of Bihar and his term lasted from November 24, 2005, to November 24, 2010.

He again became the CM on November 26, 2010. This time his tenure lasted from November 25, 2010, to May 19, 2014.

He took oath as chief minister for the fourth time on February 22, 2015, and his tenure ended on November 19, 2015.

He joined the Grand Alliance and took oath as the 35th chief minister on November 20, 2015. His tenure ended on July 26, 2017.

He switched from Grand Alliance to NDA and formed the government, taking oath as the chief minister on July 27, 2017.
