Copses in Ganga: 'Bodies found in Bihar came floating from UP'

Speaking to ETV Bharat, Chaitanya Prasad, Bihar's Additional Principal Secretary of Home Department, said that all the corpses found on the banks of Ganga in Buxar had come floating from Uttar Pradesh. He also said that now further action regarding the incident will be taken by the authorities and the government of Uttar Pradesh.

Patna: Around 100 unidentified bodies – many of them decomposed and bloated – were found floating in the Ganga over the past couple of days, triggering fears among local residents in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh that bodies of Covid victims were being dumped in the river.

While 71 of the bodies have been fished out in Bihar’s Buxar district, at least 25 bodies were found in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur and Ballia districts.

Speaking to ETV Bharat on the matter, Chaitanya Prasad, Bihar's Additional Principal Secretary of Home Department, said that all the corpses found on the banks of Ganga in Buxar had come floating from Uttar Pradesh.

"We talked to the concerned officers of Uttar Pradesh and raised our objections regarding the incident. Following which, they assured us that such incident will not be repeated in the future," he said.

He also said that now further action regarding the incident will be taken by the authorities and the government of Uttar Pradesh.

Meanwhile, Sanjeev Kumar Singhal, the DGP of Bihar, said that the DNA samples have been collected of all the corpses and further they will be matched with respective family members.

The incident of floating and piling up of corpses in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh sparked fears about the scale of the COVID crisis in the country. Authorities believe the relatives of those who succumbed to the virus, may not have been able to find space for the last rites.
