NDA heads for majority in Bihar elections

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) appeared headed for a majority in Bihar elections as it continued its lead over Mahagathbandhan as election results poured in on Tuesday evening. According to trends from the Election Commission, the ruling NDA is leading on 122 seats and Mahagathbandhan on 113 seats in the 243 member assembly.

While BJP leaders said that the NDA was coming back to power in the state due to "good governance" in Bihar, a delegation of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress went to meet officials in state electoral office in Patna late on Tuesday evening alleging "tempering" in counting on several seats.

"There are over dozens of seats where tampering has been done. They are trying to change the people's mandate, even after all such ill-intended attempts we'll form the government," RJD leader Manoj Jha told reporters after meeting Election Commission officials. "Election Commission (EC) has assured us that they will try to address all our grievances. We trust the EC but not district administration," he added.

BJP state president Sanjay Jaiswal thanked people for their support to the ruling alliance. "Prime Minister Narendra Modi has worked for poor in the last 6 years. Due to the good governance in Bihar, the leadership of NDA is coming back in majority again and for this I am thankful to the public," he said.

Bihar officials not issuing winner's certificates to RJD candidates: MP

As the NDA and the Grand Alliance are locked in a neck and neck fight for Bihar, RJD MP Manoj Jha alleged that officials are either not issuing winner's
certificates to party nominees or delaying it in at least 30 assembly constituencies.

He said that RJD-headed Grand Alliance is going to form the government in the state and he is 200 per cent sure of that.

"There are 30 assembly constituencies where officials are either delaying or not issuing certificates (to RJD candidates). They are resorting to dilatory tactics. I request the officials to work in an impartial manner as we are going to win," the RJD leader said.

Those 30 seats included Parbatta, Parihar, Barbigha, Madhuban, Triveniganj, Maharajganj, Sarairanjan, Katihar, Kurhani, Bochaha and Khagaria, he claimed.

Lacklustre show by Congress in MP, Bihar; drags down opposition alliance

A lacklustre show by the Congress in Bihar seems to have proved costly for the opposition grand alliance, as it dragged down the RJD too from the government formation in the Hindi heartland state.

While the Congress lost ground in Bihar, it also suffered significant electoral losses in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, losing a majority of bypolls in key states that saw the BJP surging ahead.

Senior party leaders again blamed EVMs for the losses, with former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Digvijaya Singh and Dalit leader Udit Raj claiming that the electronic voting machines (EVMs) can be hacked and tampered with, though their party colleague Karti Chidambaram said the EVM system is accurate and dependable, and "it's time to stop blaming the EVM".

"What is the reason that no developed country is using EVMs... if a chip is there, then it is not tamper-proof," Singh said, alleging "selective" rigging.

A bitter battle is going on for the 243-seat Bihar Assembly between the two alliances. In the midst of this, the RJD has alleged that the JD-U is trying to slow down the pace of counting. It has also alleged that successful candidates are not being given winning certificates.

"The Mahagathbandhan will emerge victoriously. The people of Bihar won't tolerate such actions. I request the outgoing CM not to call up returning officers and put pressure on them," Jha said.

Smaller parties fail to woo voters in Bihar

With the counting of votes underway on Tuesday for the 243 Assembly seats in Bihar, and the trends available, it is clear that the people of Bihar have not been impressed by the smaller parties.

Many smaller parties had formed alliances with the larger ones and tried to project themselves as an alternative political narrative to influence the voters, but the people failed to show any interest in them as evident from the trends.

The initial trends as per current reports indicate that the smaller parties will not be able to manage more than 12 to 15 seats even though some of them have been in the Bihar politics for quite a long time. Smaller parties may have a significant role in elections in other states, but the people in Bihar appear to have rejected them. This is getting clear from the currently available trends, but the results will become clearer by late Tuesday evening.

Bihar readies for D-Day

A stellar performance by the BJP enabled the ruling NDA to attain a simple majority in the Bihar assembly notwithstanding a sharp fall in the tally of the JD(U) headed by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, according to final results announced early Wednesday.

The saffron party, which had contested 110 seats, won72 and was leading in another two while the JD(U) which fought 115, won only 42 and was ahead in another. With four seats each won by junior allies HAM and VIP, the NDA is poised to have 125 seats in its kitty, three more than the number required for a simple majority.

The opposition Grand Alliance fell way short of the magic mark. The total number of seats won by all its five constituents stood at 110. Nonetheless, the RJD emerged as the single largest party in the assembly bagging 75 seats.

Its vote share at 23.03 per cent was also the highest for any single party in the elections.

The Congress managed to win only 19 of the 70 it had contested. The Left parties, though, sprang a surprise winning 16 out of the 29 seats the CPI(ML), the CPI and the CPI(M) had contested.

The performance of CPI(ML), the most radical among the mainstream Left groups, stood out as it won 12 of the 19 seats
it contested. The CPI and the CPI(M) won two seats each.

Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM clinched five seats while its alliance partner in Bihar, Mayawati's BSP, bagged one.

Chirag Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party, which pulled out of the NDA and contested nearly 150 seats, managed to win just
one.

The winners also included an Independent.
