Jehanabad: A youth, who was shot by Bihar police during vehicle inspection in Bihar's Jehanabad, died in a hospital today. The victim, identified as Sudhir Kumar (20), resident of Maima Korthu village had attempted to run away as he was not wearing a helmet. Police personnel had instantly shot at him, sources said.
The incident dated back to March 28, when the police were undertaking a vehicle checking drive near Anantapur village under Okri police station in Jehanabad. The victim was going to Bandhuganj market on a bike. Seeing police, Sudhir became scared as he was not wearing a helmet. He attempted to evade police by running away from the spot.
ASI Mumtaz Alam, who was inspecting the vehicles in the area, shot at Sudhir, who continued riding the bike till he fell on the roadside some kilometres away. He was admitted to the nearby hospital with the help of some local people. After getting information about the incident, Sudhir's family members admitted him to a private hospital in Hilsa from where he was refferred to Patna for better treatment. Since then, he was undergoing treatment at a hospital in the state capital.
Sudhir's death has left his family members in grief. They have demanded legal action against the accused police personnel along with terminating them from service immediately.

After the incident, Jehanabad superintendent of police suspended five police personnel including accused Mumtaz Alam and Okri police station chief Chandrahas Singh. An inquiry was held following which, Mumtaz Alam was arrested and is currently lodged in jail.
