As river Ganga in spate, flood threat looms over Bihar

The rising water level of Ganga has more or less creates a flood-like situation in all the districts situated along the banks of the river in Bihar every year. Meanwhile, Ganga and five other rivers were still flowing above danger mark in many parts of Bihar having triggered a flood-like situation in the districts situated along their banks.

Kathiar (Bihar): As the Ganga and five other rivers are now flowing above danger mark in several parts of Bihar, a flood-like situation has arisen in the districts situated along their banks.

At the same time, rapid erosion is seen in all the districts situated along the banks of the river. Due to the increase in the water level of the Ganga river, people are facing a lot of trouble.

The flood situation would rise at the lower reaches of the Ganga from Hathidah, up to Munger, Bhagalpur and Katihar districts. People living along the bank of the Ganga at Katihar also felt that there would be an alarming situation.

"Due to the increase in river water level and erosion, water has spread to the surrounding lowlands. Local ghats have merged into the river. People who go to bath or go fishing in the river are not able to find the dangerous zone which kills many people. But the administration is not paying any attention to this," said, a local resident, Manoj Kumar Thakur.

"At the time of Dussehra, Chhath or other festivals, there are more crowds of people along the river. During this time, necessary steps have to be taken with the barricading the riverbank areas. The danger of rising water level is still remaining and the administration is not paying any attention to it," Thakur said.

Reportedly, due to continuous rains in the India-Nepal area, the water level of many rivers of North Bihar has increased. Due to which the danger of flooding has started looming. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is also constantly holding a review meeting with all departments regarding this issue but as per locals, they are yet to get any support from the government.

Notably, every year in Bihar, hundreds of people die due to drowning in rivers during monsoons but no concrete steps are taken to prevent this issue.
