Patna: Drug firm Alkem Laboratories on Saturday said its Founder and Chairman Emeritus Samprada Singh has passed away at the age of 91.
He breathed his last at Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai.
"We would like to inform you that the company's Founder and Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Directors of the Company, Samprada Singh passed away today morning," the company informed the exchanges.
Mourning his death, Bihar's education minister, KN Prasad Verma said that Singh's demise is a great loss to the Bihar.
He was also included in the list of India’s richest people, released by Forbes. He went ahead of Anil Ambani in the ranking in 2017.
Forbes ranked him in the list of billionaires in the world in 2018. In Forbes’ ‘The World Billionaire’s List 2018’, Samprada Singh was at number 1,867 with a wealth of $ 1.2 billion.
Singh had founded pharma company Alchem 45 years ago.
Singh, who was a valued company worth more than Rs. 26,000 crores on the strength of his hard work and ability, used to work as an employee at a chemist shop.
Samprada Singh was born in 1925 in Okari village of the Mudanganj block in Jehanabad district of Bihar.
Born in a farmer’s family, Singh had graduated in BCom from Patna University.
He founded Alchem Laboratories Limited on August 8, 1973.
On 1 April 2015, he became Chairman of the Company Emeritus and lived with his family in Mumbai.
