The fNIRS device, which works on infrared electromagnetic radiation, will collect data on brain activity and help in researching new solutions to brain diseases. When the human brain works, the demand for oxygen increases in the body and this device collects the data on the amount of oxygen supplied to the brain. It tells that in which part of the brain oxygenated haemoglobin is increasing and deoxygenated haemoglobin is decreasing.

Patna: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Patna has installed functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) device in its Neurophysiology department to study the stress level in the human brain. The fNIRS device, which works on infrared electromagnetic radiation, will collect data on brain activity and help in researching new solutions to brain diseases.

According to Dr Tribhuvan Kumar, Head of Department, Physiology, AIIMS, functional near-infrared spectroscopy is a new technology that is capable of giving revolutionary results. "When the human brain works, the demand for oxygen increases in the body and this device collects the data on the amount of oxygen supplied to the brain. It tells that in which part of the brain oxygenated haemoglobin is increasing and deoxygenated haemoglobin is decreasing," Dr Kumar told ETV Bharat.

The device shows which part of the brain is more active and it will be used for research purposes. It will help in treating patients with hypertension, CBA, epilepsy and neurology. It will also help in monitoring the treatment, he added. The device is easily accessible and it can be taken to the patient's bed, Dr Kumar informed.

"This device at AIIMS Patna is the first-ever in eastern India which is a big achievement in itself. This latest technology will help to benefit all neuro patients. Diagnosis in most of the neuro cases depends on the observation of the physician which is called subjective diagnosis in medical terms. There is no such machine that can specifically diagnose neuron disease," said Dr Kamlesh Jha, Additional Professor, Neurophysiology, AIIMS.
