New Delhi: The Supreme Court bench comprising of Justice Hrishikesh Roy and Justice A. S. Bopanna adjourned a plea challenging the presidential order to amend the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BEFR) of 1873 which denies Assam an inner line permit system to insulate it against the new citizenship law.
The CJI S.A. Bobde was not presiding over the bench and therefore the matter has been adjourned to 2nd June.
The plea was filed by All Tai Ahom Students' Union and Assam Jatiya Tabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad who contended that the government's order is politically motivated and sought the introduction of Inner Line Permit(ILP).
ILP regulates the visit of Indians and is prevalent in 3 north eastern states namely, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Nagaland. Indians vising these states require ILP.
