Rohingyas on train detained in West Bengal

Rail officials on Friday detained 14 foreign nationals who had entered India illegally and were undertaking a journey by train. They are believed to be members of the Rohingya community who fled Bangladesh.

Guwahati (Assam): A total of 14 Foreign Nationals who entered India illegally and were undertaking journey by train were detained by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR).

NFR Authorities said this on Friday while adding that the Alipurduar Security Control of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) received a call from an on-train passenger on the Security Helpline No 182 regarding misbehaviour by some passengers of coach no B - 10 in train no 02501, Agartala – New Delhi Special Rajdhani Express.

"The RPF official of Alipurduar immediately informed the matter to their counterpart at New Jalpaiguri under Katihar Division where the said train was scheduled to make a stop. The officers and staff of RPF and GRP from New Jalpaiguri immediately got down to business and checked the said train after its arrival at New Jalpaiguri," officials said.

"During the checking, 14 passengers who boarded the train from Badarpur were detected by the TS (Train Superintendent) of the train of not having any legal document / Identity cards of being an Indian Citizen. The ticket details revealed that they were travelling on fake names and tickets generated in the name of others," he said.

"All the 14 detected passengers were de-trained and taken to GRP station at New Jalpaiguri. During interrogation, it was found that all of them had fled from the “Refugee Camp of Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh” and entered India without any valid document. A case was registered by GRP/New Jalpaiguri under section 14 A Foreigner’s (Amendment) Act," the officials said.

All the arrested persons who are believed to be from the Rohingya community were produced before the Magistrate and later sent to Judicial Custody.
