Mahanta too ready to milk Citizenship amendment bill

New Delhi: It appears as if politicians from Assam are not willing to miss an opportunity to milk the politics in Citizenship Amendment Bill. After Akhil Gogoi former Chief Minister of Assam and a signatory to historic Assam accord Prafulla Kumar Mahanta on Monday said that all opposition parties and some alliance partners of the BJP are determined to oppose Citizenship amendment bill.

Mahanta whose party AGP was once a close ally of the BJP said,"They are planning to meet President Ramnath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh to register their opposition against the bill."

He also added that if this bill is passed, the indeginious people in Assam will come to minority and same incident took place in Tripura.

According to sources, Mahanta will conjure up the support of other political leaders as well.

They are planning to meet President Ramnath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh to register their opposition against the bill.


Body:Speaking exclusively to ETV Bharat, Mahanta said that they have already intimated their intention to the government. "We all are deterim2d that We will oppose the Citizenship amendment bill. This bill violates the principle of the historic Assam Accord," said Mahanta.

On Sarurday Mahanta is meeting a few other political leaders coming from Northeast in Delhi to chalk out further strategy how to oppose the bill in the Parliament.

He said that if this bill is passed, the indeginious people in Assam will come to minority. "Same thing happened in Tripura," said Mahanta.


Conclusion:Mahanta, former Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president came to the limelight following the historic Assam agitation and subsequent Assam Accord that was signed in 1985 between Government of India, Assam Governmnet and All Assam Students Union (AASU) to end years long agitation. The AGP is an offshoot of AASU.

After the accord was signed AGP formed government in Assam.
