Rangia (Assam): The family of Ehtramuddin Ali Ahmed, the younger brother of India's fifth president Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, is one among lakhs of families who did not make it to the final NRC list published on August 31.

Ziauddin Ali Ahmed- the late president’s nephew and the son of Ehtramuddin Ali Ahmed and his family, who hail from Rangia in Kamrup district of Assam, was not able to apply to be included in the NRC because they could not find any of their ancestors, including the former president, on the 1951 National Register of Citizens or any of the electoral rolls up to 1971.

Sajid Ali Ahmed, Great Grand-son of Fakaruddin Ali Ahmed

Sajid Ali Ahmed, son of Ziauddin Ali Ahmed said that the names of all the eight members of the family has been excluded from the final NRC list.

According to reports, the family was not able to apply to be included in the NRC because they could not find the legacy data of their family because the name of Ekramuddin Ali Ahmed was wrongly spelt in some public records.

"We got to know that my grandfather's name was spelt as Ekram in some public records. When we looked for our legacy data, we stumbled upon our great grandfather's legacy data whose name was Zalnur Ali Ahmed. The data said that Zalnur Ali Ahmed's son was Ehtaramuddin Ali Ahmed," said Sajid.

"We have approached the court to get the name corrected," he added.

NRC requires every individual to prove that they or their ancestors entered the country before March 24, 1971. As the relatives of former president could not produce proof of the same, they were ruled out from the final list.

The final list of NRC includes 3.11 crore people while more than 19 lakh have been left out. Those who have been excluded from the NRC have 120 days to appeal against it at Foreigners Tribunals.
