Guwahati: Former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi, who was undergoing treatment at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital for post-COVID complications, passed away on Monday, Himanta Biswa Sarma, state minister for health, confirmed.
The Congress veteran was 86.
Gogoi’s health condition deteriorated on Saturday afternoon as he fell unconscious due to difficulty in breathing.
He underwent dialysis for six hours on Sunday, Sarma said.
Gogoi was diagnosed with COVID in August end and was administered plasma therapy when his condition worsened.
He later battled post-COVID complications after testing negative.
He was on non-invasive ventilation since November 2. But on Saturday was put under invasive ventilation, said the doctors at the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where Gogoi was under treatment.
Born on April 1, 1936, Gogoi gained a tall political stature after he was elected as the Joint Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in 1976 under the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Gogoi served six terms as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Lok Sabha. He first represented Jorhat in 1971–85.
Later Gogoi was elected from Kaliabor (1991–96/1998–2002). The Kaliabor seat is currently held by his son Gaurav Gogoi.
