Despite ban, Assam witnesses Buffalo fights as part of Bihu celebrations

Despite the apex court ban on animal fights and race across the country, people of Morigaon district organized the traditional buffalo fight as part of Bihu celebrations. The buffalo fight has been a traditional game of the state which had received royal patronage during the Ahom rule.

Nagaon: Despite the Supreme Court ban on organizing any kinds of animal fight, people in Assam's Nagaon and Morigaon district on Friday organized the buffalo fight, a traditional game which had been continuing in the area since ages.

In 2014, the Supreme Court had banned all kinds of animal fight and races and asked the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) to ensure that no pain or wound is inflicted upon the animals in the name of organizing fights or races.

The buffalo fight is organized in different parts of Assam on the first day of Assamese calendar, in the month of Magh, as part of Bhogali Bihu or Magh Bihu celebrations.

The buffalo fight has been a traditional game which had received royal patronage during the Ahom rule.

The buffalo owners say that the buffalo fights are organized during this period to ensure that the buffalos do not attack their owners or other people in the village.

The buffalos were bathed and decorated with Assamese Gamochas, made to lock horn and fight. The fight continues until one of the buffalos gets wounded or exhausted and escapes from the field.

The fight was organised between 20 pairs of buffalos at Ahatguri and Baidyabori area of Morigaon district while several other pairs were also made to lock horns at Deobali and other areas of Nagaon district. Thousands of people thronged both the venues to have a glimpse of the fight.
