Complete 14-day lockdown in Guwahati from June 28 midnight

Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that a complete lockdown will be imposed for 14 days beginning from the midnight of June 28 in the Kamrup Metropolitan District, which includes the city of Guwahati.

Guwahati (Assam): A fresh lockdown will be imposed for a period of 14 days from Sunday midnight in the entire Kamrup Metropolitian district, Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Friday.

Complete lockdown will be imposed in the district, which includes the city of Guwahati, from the midnight of June 28, the minister said, adding that it will remain in force for 14 days.

The minister said that the measure has been taken in view of the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the area.

Besides, the minister also announced that weekend lockdown on Saturdays and Sundays will be enforced in urban areas across Assam. "Areas falling under the jurisdiction of town committees and municipalities will come under the ambit of the weekend lockdown and will continue until further notice," Sarma said.

Earlier yesterday, the state had reported 276 fresh coronavirus cases, taking the tally to 6,646 in the state.

Of the 6,646 cases, 2,601 are active. Assam has witnessed nine deaths due to the disease, 4,033 patients have been discharged and three have migrated out of the state. A total of 3,51,753 samples have been tested for the disease in the state so far.

Sarma had earlier said the number of cases will continue to increase in Guwahati and it will take at least a month to flatten the curve.
