Guwahati: Ahead of the elections next year, the five-year-old alliance between the ruling BJP in Assam and the Bodoland Peoples' Front (BPF) is all set to come to an end.

The BJP national leadership in Delhi are likely to announce this anytime soon from the union capital.

Sources in the Saffron party's Assam unit said that Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, state unit president Ranjit Kumar Dass and convener of the BJP led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), Himanta Biswa Sarma have arrived in the union capital to convince the brief about the situation.

The BJP is ruling in Assam with the support of regional party Asom Gana Parishad and BPF, which has 14 and 12 members in the House. The BPF had been a partner of the BJP led NDA and supported the BJP, which won 80 seats out of the 126 assembly seats in Assam in 2016.

The BJP dispensation at Dispur led by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had accommodated three BPF MLAs in his cabinet.

The relationship between the BJP and BPF, however, soured in the past few months after the Assam unit of the BJP announced that the saffron party will independently contest the elections to the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), which is ruled by the BPF since 2005. The BTC elections, which was scheduled for April this year had to be deferred due to COVID situation and the elections are going to be held on December 7 and 10.

Both the BJP and BPF leaders were seen attacking each other during the election campaigns recently. While BJP leader and NEDA convener Himanta Biswa Sarma had attacked the BPF for severe misrule and financial mismanagement in the BTC during the 15 years of BPF rule.

Sarma had also compared BPF Chief Hagrama Mohilary with a cat, BPF chief Hagrama Mohilary had compared the powerful minister with a fox.
