Assam Police rescue stranded workers from Shella in Meghalaya

The Assam Police have rescued 500 stranded workers from Shella in Meghalaya. Chaos ensued after clashes broke out between the members of Khasi Students Union (KSU) and non-tribals during a rally organised against the CAA and to demand implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP). A migrant worker was stabbed to death while another was seriously injured after being thrashed.

Guwahati: Assam Police rescued stranded workers from Shella in Meghalaya on Thursday. Assam Police with the help of Meghalaya Police under the Shella Police Station rescued almost 500 workers and Shifted them from Ichamati to Jorabat in Guwahati.

Clashes had broken out between Khasi Students Union (KSU) members and non-tribals during a rally organised against the Citizenship Amendment Act and to demand implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP), at Ichamati area close to the India-Bangladesh border on Friday. A migrant worker was stabbed to death in the busy Iewduh market here on Saturday, taking the toll in clashes between tribal and non-tribal groups in Meghalaya to Three, police said.

In another mob attack, a migrant labourer was seriously injured after being thrashed at Sohra market in Sohra Civil Subdivision, the officer said, adding that he has been shifted to the Civil Hospital in Shillong for treatment.

After the clashes, a curfew was imposed in Shillong and adjoining areas and mobile internet services suspended in six districts East Jaintia Hills, West Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi, West Khasi Hills an South West Khasi hills from Friday night for 48-hours, they said. The curfew imposed in Shillong after one person was killed in clashes between KSU members and non-tribals during a meeting on CAA and inner line permit (ILP) was lifted Saturday morning but a ban on mobile internet services was continuing in six districts. Most shops and businesses in the city were closed even after the curfew ended, officials said.
