Guwahati: Assam Police on Sunday directed All India Youth Congress president Srinivas BV to appear before it for questioning on May 2 in connection with a complaint of harassment and gender discrimination filed by expelled Congress leader Angkita Dutta against him.

In the notice, Maitreyi Deka, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, East Guwahati has asked Srinivas to appear at Dispur police station at 11 am on May 2. Also, it has stated that if he failed to comply with the order then it could get him arrested. Earlier, Assam Police had lodged an FIR against Srinivas. A five-member team of the Guwahati Police led by ADGP Maitreyi Deka left for Karnataka on Saturday.

Earlier, on the same day, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) had expelled Dutta from the primary membership for six years over "anti-party activities". On April 19, Dutta had registered a complaint at Dispur police station alleging that she was harassed and discriminated by Srinivas for the last six months.

Taking to Twitter Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, ''The Assam police is acting in accordance with the law. They are currently investigating a case filed by a female Congress worker against the accused person under Section 354 of IPC. It is unfair to blame me for the lack of a safe environment within the Congress party for female workers. Please advise the accused to cooperate with the legal process.''
