Karimganj: The police in Assam's Karimganj district have stumbled on a secret underground tunnel that connects India and Bangladesh while investigating a recent abduction case.
It is believed that the underground tunnel which was beneath the fencing of Indo-Bangla border was used by the infiltrators, criminals and also by the cattle smugglers.
Karimganj Superintendent of Police, Mayank Kumar said that they came across an underground tunnel while investigating an abduction case.
"There was an FIR in Nilambazar police station saying that one of the abducted victims was taken to the other side of the International border by the criminals. We came here to search for things and investigate the abduction case. But we came across the underground tunnel," he said.
He, however, refused to make any comment if the abductees were taken to the other side of the border and said that the investigation is still on.
"As the investigation is on, I cannot make any comment if the abductees were taken to the other side or not. However, there have been certain issues like this in the border areas and we have informed this to the border security force," he added.
Notably, Assam has 264 km of International border with Bangladesh out of which 92-km falls in Karimganj district.
Some portion of the International border is still unfenced and police say that anti-socials from another side of the border often take advantage of the situation to sneak into this side of the border to commit crimes.
