Dibrugarh (Assam): The town of Dibrugarh came to a halt, after more than a lakh gathered in a protest rally organised by the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) against the enactment of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
The protest witnessed a massive footfall at the "Janatar Gorjon" programme held in Chowkidinghee Ground.
The speakers who addressed the huge gathering were Dr Nagen Saikia, former president of the Asom Sahitya Sabha, Lurin Jyoti Gogoi, Gen Secy of AASU along with noted artists like Manash Robin, Lohit Gogoi and Neel Akash.
The speakers here vowed to carry on with the protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act until scrapped.
Subsequently, Dibrugarh observed a spontaneous shutdown to express solidarity to AASU's anti-CAA "Janata Gorjon" programme despite no bandh call given by students' union.
All business establishments, schools, colleges and banking institutions remained closed during the day.
