Assam floods death toll reaches 5, close to 4 lakh marooned

Over three lakh people hailing from nine districts of the state have already been affected during the first wave of floods in Assam. At least five people died in flood related incidents in the state.

Guwahati: At least five people were killed in flood related incidents in Assam even as close to four lakh people continued to be marooned by the deluge on Friday.

Officials of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) informed that two people, one each at Golapara and at Hojai, died in flood related incidents in last 24 hours taking the flood toll to five so far.

A total of 381320 people continued to be affected by the floods on Friday.

The officials further said that over 350 village in seven districts of the state have been affected by the floods.

The deluge have also affected close to 25,000 hectare of crop land with standing crops on it and it has rendered over 21000 people homeless, forcing them to shelter in 190 relief camps opened by the district administrations.

The floods have also affected the Orang national park in Darrang district.

"The flood waters have affected several anti-poaching camps inside the national park," said a official of the Assam forest department.

The Orang national park is home to at least 68 one horned rhinos and other rare species.
