Guwahati: At least seven jawans of the Assam police and paramilitary forces have died during the violent clash at Lailapur along the Assam Mizoram border on Monday. Sources in the police said that seven jawans of Assam police and paramilitary forces, who had received serious injuries during the incident have breathed their last.
Although the Assam police is yet to confirm this officially, sources in the force said that almost 65 police personnel were injured during the incident and seven of them have succumbed to their injuries.
Taking to Twitter, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his condolences over the demise of the officials. Sarma said that the jawans had sacrificed their lives to defend the state's constitutional boundary.
"I am deeply pained to inform that six brave jawans of @assampolice have sacrificed their lives while defending constitutional boundary of our state at the Assam-Mizoram border," the Assam Chief Minister tweeted on Monday.

Sarma had earlier sought the intervention of Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga over the incident of clash between the people from both the states along the inter-state border at Lailapur after several people were injured on Monday.
Sarma in his tweets said "the Kolasib ( Mizoram) SP is asking us to withdraw from our post until then their civilians won't listen nor stop violence. How can we run government in such circumstances? Hope you will intervene at earliest @AmitShah @PMOIndia."
Sarma also spoke to Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga and assured him that Assam will maintain the status quo and peace between the borders of our state. "I have expressed my willingness to visit Aizawl and discuss these issues if need be," Sarma tweeted on Monday.
The Assam Chief Minister has rushed the state's water resources minister Piyush Hazarika to visit the Lailapur area along the Assam-Mizoram border where the violence took place on Monday.
The incident took place at Lailapur on Monday when a police team from the Assam side went to stop the encroachment of areas under Assam's jurisdiction by some miscreants from the Mizoram side. However, a group of miscreants armed with sticks, stones and machetes attacked the Assam police team, forcing them to fire in the black to disperse the crowd. Police said that the situation soon turned violent with more people joining the mayhem and destroying the vehicle of the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar district.
On the other hand, Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga has requested the Assam Chief Minister to instruct the Assam police to withdraw from the Vairengte area along the border for the safety of civilians.

"Hon'ble @himantabiswa ji, as discussed I kindly urge that Assam Police @assampolice be instructed to withdraw from Vairengte for the safety of civilians.," tweeted Zoramthanga.
The Mizoram Chief Minister said that two companies of Assam police with civilians lathi-charged & tear-gassed civilians at Vairengte Auto Rickshaw stand inside Mizoram on Monday.
"Dear Himantaji, after cordial meeting of CMs by Hon’ble Shri @amitshah ji, surprisingly 2 companies of Assam Police with civilians lathicharged & tear gassed civilians at Vairengte Auto Rickshaw stand inside Mizoram today. They even overrun CRPF personnel /Mizoram Police.," tweeted Zoramthanga.
