Countdown begins for Chandrayaan-2 launch

The countdown for the ambitious project of ISRO, Chandrayaan-2, has begun on Sunday evening. The satellite is supposed to explore the uncharted lunar south pole.

Countdown for Chandrayaan-2 beings on Sunday evening

Sriharikota: Chandrayaan-2, which was earlier scheduled to be launched on July 15, will now take-off for its moon mission on Monday from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota of Andhra Pradesh.

The countdown for the launch of the Chandrayaan 2 mission began at 6:43 pm Sunday.

After 20 hours, from the beginning of the countdown, the GSLV Mk III will finally take-off at 2.43 pm on Monday.

In a press conference, ISRO Chief, K Sivan said, "ISRO has finalised the launch of Chandrayaan-2. All preparations have been done and the technical snag has been corrected. It took 1.5 days to rectify the issue."

Chandrayaan-2 was originally scheduled to take-off in the first week of January, but was rescheduled for 2:50 am on July 15. It had to be postponed again after a snag was observed in its most powerful rocket, less than an hour before its launch from the spaceport.

The satellite is supposed to explore the uncharted lunar south pole. The main scientific objective is to map the location and abundance of lunar water. It will take 54 days to accomplish the task of landing on the moon through meticulously planned orbital phases.

The mission is planned to be launched to the Moon by the heavy-lift rocket GSLV Mk III.

ISRO's successful lunar mission Chandrayaan-1 orbited the moon, 3400 times, and was operational for 312 days till August 29' 2009.
