Cops files cases against civil rights leaders for 'collaborating' with Maoists

Police have registered cases against leaders of organizations such as the Civil Rights Association, the Human Rights Forum and revolutionary writers association members. They have been booked under UAPA and they were allegedly connected with Maoists.

Visakhapatnam: Police have registered cases against civil rights leaders for allegedly aiding and abetting Maoist activities. Cases are registered in Visakhapatnam and Guntur districts under various sections, including the UAPA, against leaders of organizations such as the Civil Rights Association, the Human Rights Forum and revolutionary writers association members.

Police have registered FIR's against several community leaders in Visakhapatnam and Guntur districts on November 23 and November 24. However, police said the cases were registered as there was evidence that they have contacts with the Maoists.

On November 23, police arrested a man named Pangi Nagaraju at Kumada village in Munchingiputtu Mandal of Visakhapatnam district. According to the FIR, it was known that he was working as a local journalist and was supplying drugs, literature and the necessary equipment to the Maoists. The police have also seized many batteries, revolutionary literature.

According to the information given by him, cases were filed against the general secretaries of the A P Civil Rights Association and the Human Rights Forum secretaries Chandrasekhar, V S Krishna and representatives of various communities, rights and literary societies.

Meanwhile, cases were registered against 27 people under various sections on November 24 at the Guntur District Piduguralla town police station. While the police conducted inspections in the village of Jalakallu, Kambampati Chaitanya belonging to the People's War Maoist group had been arrested. Cases have been registered against him and 26 others for collaborating in Maoist activities.

Wakapalli rape case caused a nationwide sensation in 2007. In August 2007, SPF and Greyhounds surrounded the Wakapalli village, carrying out combing for the Maoists. Then there was a clash between the tribals and the police. Thirteen women of Wakapalli alleged that they were raped by the police. They were supported by communities. A case has been registered against the police.

SC and ST cases in Visakhapatnam are being heard by a special court as per the directions of the Supreme Court. V S Krishna, secretary of the Human Rights Forum, alleged that "the investigation has now reached a critical stage. The top Maoist leader, said that the proof of this was the registration in the FIR as he had given instructions to provoke women in the Wakapalli case.
