Visakhapatnam: After a decade long water crisis, the villagers of Dumaguda solved their problem by using their own funds and labour to get fresh drinking water.
In Andhra Pradesh's Dumaguda village, the villagers who are the tribe of Manyam used to fetch water by walking several kilometers in the hills.
Reportedly, government schemes were introduced years ago in the village but it was not implemented due to some problems.
A villager said, "Two years ago, the government had introduced a scheme and dug a pipeline across the hills. But, due to electricity issues, the scheme could not be implemented."
These villagers waited two years for the government to resolve their perennial problem of water crisis but even after announcing several measures the localities faced the issue.
Dumaguda residents also complained that they went to the sarpanch of the village many times with their problems but no actions were taken by the government after which they built the pipeline on their own.
Another villager said, "First we dug out the old pipeline which was half a meter deep into the earth. After digging out the pipeline, we carried it towards the water source in the hills."
The hill dwellers then distributed the pipeline uniformly and gave new connections to the existing pipeline.
Lastly, they build a new pipeline system with bricks and soil and made water flow towards the Dumaguda village.
The villagers are now happy as they solved their decade long water crisis on their own.
