Andhra Pradesh: Villages record highest spike in COVID-19 cases

Rural areas in Andhra Pradesh have been witnessing a sudden spike in number of COVID cases. Andhra Pradesh so far has reported a total 103521 active coronavirus cases while the state continues to ramp up testing .

Amaravati: Rural areas in Andhra Pradesh are witnessing an alarming rise in coronavirus cases, in fact, the surge is far higher in small towns and villages than in cities, a source said.

From August 1 to 19, 52 per cent of the cases were reported from urban areas whereas from August 23 to 29, 56 per cent of the cases were from rural localities. Villages in Prakasam district accounted for 69 per cent of the total district tally followed by Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, Nellore and Kadapa districts.

According to the reports, 597 people died of coronavirus in the last week of August in Andhra Pradesh, the death rate was comparatively higher in rural areas. While Andhra Pradesh reported a total 3,45,216 coronavirus cases till August 22, the tally saw a huge daily spike of 10,000 cases over the past 12 days. From August 22 to September 2, 1,10,315 fresh cases were recorded in the state.

Currently, COVID-19 cases are increasing by 10,000 every day. Official numbers prove the alarming rate at which the pandemic is spreading. Among all states in India, Andhra Pradesh ranks fifth in the number of increase in the death toll. With 24,000 deaths, Maharashtra has the highest fatality rate in the country followed by Tamil Nadu (7,332), Karnataka (5,702) and Delhi (4,444). Some experts say, with the continuing increase in coronavirus cases, AP’s death toll may exceed that of Delhi in few weeks.
