Tokyo: The 17-day COVID pandemic era 2020 Olympic Games has come to a successful end here at the Olympic Stadium on Sunday with the hue of Paris 2024.
In the last two weeks, athletes from across the world braved the fear of COVID infection, yet came to participate in the Games and won medals presenting superlative performances. It was the culmination of their five years of hard work.
So after the end of the 32nd Olympics, who finish on top and where does India stand on the tally?
The United States, on the penultimate day of the Games, toppled China from the pole position with 39 gold, 41 silver and 33 bronze. Altogether, the US won 113 medals. On the other hand, China, which held the No. 1 position for most parts of the Games, finished second with 38 gold, 32 silver and 18 bronze. Host Japan finished third with 27 gold, 14 silver and 17 bronze, whereas India scripted a new chapter in Tokyo, winning seven medals, their highest at the Olympic Games, for the first time.
Neeraj Chopra's gold in men's javelin throw on Saturday helped India pip their London 2012 tally of six medals and finish at 48th position in Tokyo 2020. Apart from Neeraj's gold, for India, Mirabai Chanu (silver), Ravi Kumar Dahiya (silver), Lovlina Borgohain (bronze), PV Sindhu (bronze), Bajrang Punia (bronze) and the Indian men's hockey team (bronze) contributed to the medal tally.
