New York: 19-year-old Bianca Andreescu pulled off one of the biggest upset victories in the history of US Open Grand Slam women's singles final on Sunday. The Canadain thrashed Serena Williams 6-3, 7-5 to claim her maiden Grand Slam title.
In the process, Andreescu has become the first Canadian ever to win a Grand Slam singles title. The teenage tennis sensation also showed courage to achieve the feat in front of hostile crowds who were cheering for American star Williams.
During the final, Andreescu was seen covering her ears on the court as the crowds kept cheering for Williams.
“I know you guys wanted Serena to win, so I'm sorry,” Andreescu told reporters after the match. “Obviously it was expected for Serena to fight back, she's done that so many times in the past and that's why she's a true champion on and off the court. But I just tried my best to block everything out and the last game wasn't easy,” she said.
“Bianca played an unbelievable match,” Williams told reporters after the final. “If anyone could win the tournament, outside of Venus, I’m happy it’s Bianca.”
“I wish I could have played better,” she said.

Andreescu’s win came at a time when it looked like that Williams, 37, was going to make a stunning comeback. Andreescu earned the match point twice prior to winning the match, but Williams denied her on both occasions.
This defeat also denied Williams an opportunity to equal former Australia tennis legend Margaret Court's 24 Grand Slam singles wins. Williams now has 23 Grand Slam titles in her trophy cabinet.

This was apparently the third time Williams failed to win her 24th major title since she returned to court from a prolonged absence after giving birth to her daughter, Olympia.
In Saturday's US Open final against Andreescu she nearly added to the list as the American took 5-1 advantage before the former established herself in the second set and eventually won her maiden major title.
