  • The union government has decided to launch several leagues across all sports exclusively for girl athletes to encourage them to join the sport at the grassroot level and consequently groom them to excel in the discipline in coming future. Named as the ‘Khelo India Girls League’ (KIGL), the first to get off the blocks will be the ‘Khelo India Girls Football League’. It will be held under the aegis of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) while the technical and organisational support will be extended by the All India Football Federation.
  • The International Judo Federation (IJF) suspended Iran from competing in any future judo competitions due to the fact that Iranian judoka Saeid Mollaei had been instructed by the Iranian authorities and the Iran Judo Federation to withdraw from competing to avoid a potential contest against an Israeli athlete.
  • A woman who was treated for breast cancer a year ago has become the first person to swim across the English Channel four times non-stop. Sarah Thomas, aged 37, began the epic challenge in the early hours of Sunday and finished after more than 54 hours. Interestingly, the swim was due to be about 80 miles but because of strong tides, Thomas ended up swimming closer to 130 miles.
  • The Union Sports Ministry sanctioned Rs 5 crore to athlete Anju Bobby George's Athletics Academy at Bengaluru. The academy run by the Anju Bobby Sports Foundation was earlier inaugurated by athletics legend Mike Powell during his visit to the city in May, 2016.
  • The indian men’s national team qualifying for the quarterfinals of the Asian Volleyball Championships in Tehran on Sunday. The qualification means that India will also gain entry into the eight-team Olympic qualifying event in China in January next year. Interestingly, India who are ranked 131st in the world, had earlier defeated Kazakhstan who are ranked 39 in the latest FIVB World Rankings.
  • The Indian men's team logged their second-best result at ITTF Asian Table Tennis Championships, finishing fifth after defeating Hong Kong 3-0 in the classification match. The Indian team also defeated Iran 3-0 to clinch the gold medal in the 1st division. With this win, India will gain a direct entry in the next Asian championships in 2021.
  • Spain captured its second FIBA basketball World Cup title after defeating Argentina in the gold medal game at the Wukesong Arena in Beijing, China. In the process, Spanish International and Three-time All-Star Marc Gasol became only the second man to win an NBA crown and the World Cup in the same year.
