Hyderabad: Take a look at the important sports stories that failed to receive its due recognition.
- Reigning world champion Yulimar Rojas soared to the second-longest triple jump of all-time by managing 15.41 metres at the Andujar athletics meet. The Venezuelan was just nine centimetres short of the long-standing women's world record of 15.50m set by Ukrainian Inessa Kravets in Gothenburg in 1995.
- The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports have de-recognised the Paralympic Committee of India, citing a violation of the National Sports Code in the body’s decision to sack president Rao Inderjit Singh. In the suspension order, the Ministry wrote that the PCI has been penalised for misgovernance.
- Ronaldo Laitanjam broke the Asian record in the men's junior 200m time trial event, previously held by China's Liu Qi by clocking 10.065 seconds in the qualifying round of the Asian Track Cup. The youngster bagged four golds as India topped the medal tally by clinching 10 gold, 8 silver and 7 bronze medals.
- The WTA Hong Kong Open tennis tournament, which was scheduled to take place from October 5 to 13, has been postponed due to ongoing protests in the city. Hong Kong has for months been rocked by increasingly violent protests, triggered by an extradition bill. The bill has now been withdrawn but the protests have continued and have grown to reflect wider demands for democratic reform.
- South Korea asked the International Olympic Committee to ban its use at the Tokyo Games next year. The 'Rising Sun' flag has been an ensign for Japan's Maritime Self-Defence Forces since 1954, but in much of East Asia, it is seen as a symbol of the country's military aggression during World War II. Interestingly, World football's governing body FIFA has already banned the flag's use.
- Sahar Khodayari, an Iranian female football fan, died from burns a week after setting herself on fire outside a courtroom, after learning she may face six months in prison for trying to enter a stadium. The 29-year-old, who had tried to enter the stadium posing as a man, had spent three nights in jail before being released. Interestingly, Iran bans women attending sports stadiums since 1979’s Islamic Revolution.
- The continued communication blockade in the Kashmir valley post-revocation of the state’s special status has cast its shadow over the participation of J&K football team in the north zone group of the upcoming Santosh Trophy commencing from September 22. The major reason for it is the failure of the J&K Football Association to contact the players from different villages and districts of the Kashmir valley for registration and practice sessions before the start of the tournament.
