- Jharkhand created history on Thursday after becoming the first team in the history of Ranji Trophy to win a match after being forced to follow-on. Jharkhand defeated Tripura by 54 runs despite being the second-best side for the most part of the game.
Batting first, Tripura posted 289 runs on the board in their first innings before bundling Jharkhand out for a paltry 136 in their first innings. Following on, Jharkhand scored 418/8 in the second innings before Tripura were dismissed for 211 thus handing Jharkhand a memorable victory. - Sporting activities took a hit in the curfew-struck city of Guwahati where an Indian Super League (ISL) football game and a Ranji Trophy cricket match were suspended on Dec 12 owing to the unrest over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
Day four proceedings of the Ranji match between Assam and the Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) along with the ISL clash between NorthEast United FC and Chennaiyin FC were called off in the Assamese city. - Indian Women’s Hockey Team Captain Rani Rampal, and 2018 Asian Games Gold Medalist in shooting Saurabh Chaudhary, bagged the grandest honours at the FICCI India Sports Awards 2019 as they won the Sports Person of the Year Awards at the grandeur ceremony held at the FICCI Federation House in New Delhi on December 12.
The coveted FICCI India Sports Award are an attempt by FICCI to acknowledge and recognize the contribution of sports persons and various stakeholders who deliver excellent results during the year. - Satnam Singh, the first Indian to be drafted into the NBA, has been provisionally suspended by India's anti-doping agency after failing a drugs test last month.
Singh, who joined the Dallas Mavericks in 2015, failed an out-of-competition test last month and was handed a temporary ban on November 19, according to the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) newsletter.
The 23-year-old Singh, however, has denied the charge, asserting he is "clean". - Actor Suniel Shetty has been named as the brand ambassador of the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA), and was officially unveiled at a ceremony in New Delhi on Dec 12. After more than 150 athletes failed various dope tests this year the country’s anti-doping federation is hopeful that the presence of a celebrity will help keep sports clean and deter the players from the menace.
- Led by stupendous performances by athletes across all domains, India concluded its campaign at the 13th South Asian Games with the highest-ever medal tally in the history of the event. India clinched a whopping 312 medals, including 174 gold, 93 silver, and 45 bronze medals, surpassing the 309 (189 gold, 90 silver, and 30 bronze) it had won in the previous edition in Guwahati and Shillong in 2016.
The Indian athletes left hosts Nepal far behind who stood a distant second with 206 medals (51 gold, 60 silver, and 95 bronze) while Sri Lanka was third with 251 medals (40 gold, 83 silver, and 128 bronze). Interestingly, India has topped the medal tally of every South Asian Games since its inception in 1984 and this year is no exception.
