Portimao (Portugal): Team Suzuki rider Joan Mir described his emotion as he was presented with the 2020 Moto GP Championship trophy on Sunday, having failed to finish the final race of the season in Portimao.

''You can't believe what this means for me. I see my name, and okay it's okay - but then I see all the names on this tower and it's super emotional moment. It's what I've been fighting for all my life. And finally to have my name here means a lot,'' he said.

Mir, who secured his first world title last weekend, did not finish the race at the Algarve International Circuit because of an apparent mechanical problem.

Miguel Oliveira won his home Grand Prix, finishing ahead of Jack Miller and Franco Morbidelli.

The MotoGP season was shortened and had its calendar severely altered because of the coronavirus pandemic, with all races outside Europe canceled.

This year’s title race was wide open after six-time MotoGP champion Marc Marquez was sidelined with an injury. There were nine different winners in 14 races, with five first-time winners.

Morbidelli (PETRONAS Yamaha) finished in second spot and Alex Rins (Team Suzuki) in third.
