Asian Championships: Indian wrestler Sarita Mor bags gold medal

Sarita, competing in her first Asian event since winning a silver in 2017 in 58kg, won 3-2 win against Battsetseg Atlantsetseg in the women's 59kg final.

New Delhi: Indian wrestler Sarita Mor eked out a 3-2 win over Battsetseg Atlantsetseg of Mongolia in the women's 59kg final to clinch the gold medal at the Asian Championships on Thursday at the KD Jadhav Indoor stadium here. Pinki (55kg) and Divya Kakran (68kg) had also won gold on Thursday.

Sarita, competing in her first Asian event since winning a silver in 2017 in 58kg, won her first two bouts by technical superiority against Madina Bakbergenova (Kazakhstan) and Nazira MarsbekKyzy (Kyrgyzstan) before winning 10-3 against Japan's Yuumi Kon.

Earlier in the day, Indian grapplers Kakran and Pinki clinched gold medals in the competition.

Divya defeated Japanese junior world champion Naruha Matsuyuki in the 68 kg. She was one among four Indian wrestlers to have assured themselves of at least a silver medal on the first day of the women's wrestling bouts at the competition which was underway here.

The others were Nirmala Devi (50 kg), Pinki (55 kg)and Sarita Mor (59 kg). Her final bout against Naruha Matsuyuki of Japan was the closest one where she reined supreme pinning down her opponent 6-4 to seal her name on the gold medal. The 68 kg category was played in round-robin format as only 5 wrestlers were in fray.

Meanwhile, Pinki (55Kg) started her day in a winning note against Shokhida Akhmedova of Uzbekistan by 12-4 in Round 3 and lost to Kana Higashikawa of Japan to enter the semi final where she defeated Marina Zuyeva of Kazakhstan by a score of 6-0. Pinki won her gold medal bout 2-1 against Dulguun Bolormaa of Mongolia to help India win their second gold in the women's category.

Three-time Commonwealth Championship Gold Medallist Nirmala Devi (50Kg), on the other hand, had to settle for a silver after she lost 2-3 to 2018 Under 23 World Champion Miho Igarashi of Japan in the finals.

Nirmala Devi had earlier defeated Munkhnar Byambasuren of Mongolia in the quarterfinals by 6-4 to reach the semis. In the semi-finals, she got the better of Dauletbike Yakhshimuratova of Uzbekistan by 10-0 margin.
