Hyderabad: Hockey India, on Monday, named Graham Reid as the new chief coach of the Indian men's hockey team. The 54-year-old will join the team in Bengaluru shortly for the ongoing national camp at the Sports Authority of India.
Reid has a decorated playing career as the defender/midfielder for the Australian national team and was part of the silver medal winning team at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. He was also part of the Australian squad that won back-to-back Champions Trophy titles in 1984, 1985 and 1989, 1990.
Here are some interesting facts about Reid:
- Reid, who is Australia's silver-medallist from the 1992 Olympics and bronze medallist from the 1990 World Cup, has credible coaching credentials.
- He was appointed Australia's assistant coach in 2009 and went on to become the head coach, which included two Champions Trophy triumphs as well as the 2014 Commonwealth Games gold.
- The 55-year old Reid had won the 2015 World League and 2016 Champions Trophy with the Kookaburras but stepped down following a disappointing performance at the 2016 Rio Olympics, the first time Australia failed to finish in the top-four since the 1980 edition.
- Later, Reid, who is a member of the Queensland Hockey Hall of Fame, became the assistant coach of Netherlands men's team and the head coach of Amsterdam Club which he was part of as a player in 1993 and 1994.
- In his recent stint, he worked as the Assistant Coach for the Netherlands team who won the Silver Medal at the 2018 Men's World Cup.
Meanwhile, it should be noted that Reid will be in charge of Indian Hockey Team during their next international assignment -- tour to Australia in May 2019.
