Former Hockey player Balbir Singh Jr. passes away at 89

Sukhpal Kaur, his wife, informed that Singh was battling heart-related ailments and passed away in his sleep. She said she tried to wake him up at around 5 am in the morning but he didn't respond.

Chandigarh: Former Hockey player and member of Asian Games silver medallist team Balbir Singh Junior passed away on Sunday here.

Singh was 89.

Sukhpal Kaur, his wife, informed that Singh was battling heart-related ailments and passed away in his sleep. She said she tried to wake him up at around 5 am in the morning but he didn't respond.

Singh was born in Jalandhar in 1932 and was currently a resident of Sector 34 in Chandigarh.

His last rites were performed in the city, his wife said adding that Singh is survived by his daughter who lives in the USA whereas his son is a resident of Canada.

A popular name in the national circuit, Singh had contributed immensely to the Indian Railways in Hockey. His efforts saw the team becoming national champions in 1957 - 1959.
