Lewandowski crowned German player of the year award

Lewandoski, who equalled Juventus striker Cristiano Ronaldo's 15 goal record in UCL this year, was the runaway winner of the title awarded.

Frankfurt: Bayern Munich's Polish forward Robert Lewandowski was crowned with Germany's Footballer of the Year on Sunday.

Lewandoski, who equalled Juventus striker Cristiano Ronaldo's 15 goal record in UCL this year, was the runaway winner of the title awarded.

The award was decided by the votes of German sports journalists. Lewandoski was given 276 votes, followed by Bayern's German stars Thomas Muller (54 votes) and Joshua Kimmich (49).

"I'm very proud," Lewandowski was quoted as saying by a German outlet. "Expectations are getting higher and higher and every year I try to surpass them."

Lewandowski netted a record 55 goals for Bundesliga champions in 2019-20 season. He was the top scorer in every competition he played this year. The 31-year-old Polish striker scored 34 goals in the Bundesliga, 15 in the Champions League and six in the German Cup, as Bayern won all three.

Lewandowski is also favourite for the FIFA Player of the Year prize. The international body of football in a statement had said it wants to make the award happen despite the coronavirus pandemic. However, a date for the same has not been set yet.

"I can't think of any other player who is more deserving than him to be named FIFA World Player of the Year," said Bayern coach Hansi Flick, who was named best German coach.

Wolfsburg's Dane Pernille Harder was named best German women player of the year.
