Barcelona: Real Madrid on Wednesday held Barcelona for a goalless draw in a La Liga clash at the Camp Nou stadium.

There was nothing to separate the top-two ranked teams in the La Liga.

It is the first time in 17 years when an El Clasico game ended without any goal. The last time when Barca and Real played a goalless game it was back in 2002 in November.

Gareth Bale's second-half strike - ruled out for offside - representing the closest either side came to breaking the deadlock.

Barcelona and Madrid are both on 36 points but the former had a better goal difference and hence acquired top spot. Madrid are five points ahead of third-placed Sevilla.

The match was rearranged from October after the initial date became a security risk due to the prospect of Catalan independence protests.

Barcelona will now face Alaves in the La Liga fixture on December 21 while Real Madrid will play against Athletic Bilbao on December 23.

Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane said he was pleased with both the performance and the fact that the game went ahead despite the abnormal circumstances.

The game inside the stadium was completed without any major incidents either on the field or in the stands. But in the streets outside on Wednesday, a detachment of riot police clashed with protesters soon after the start, and plastic trash cans were set on fire.

"Everything went well for Barca and for Real Madrid, and for football," Zidane said. "So we can all be happy."

Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde said his team was not affected by the protest since there is always an intense atmosphere surrounding games against Madrid.

"With the tension that the game had already, I saw there were a few yellow balls, but not many. We tried to treat it as normally as possible. People protested, but nothing more," Valverde said.

"As a social event, I don't have an opinion. As a sporting event, we drew."
