Lyon: The United states won the Women's World Cup for a record fourth time as they eventually thumped the Netherlands 2-0 in Lyon on Sunday.

Megan Rapinoe's penalty and Rose Lavelle's fine run finish helped the defending champions to successfully defend their crown in the second half, after stubborn first-half defending from the Dutch.
Veteran winger Rapinoe's calmly-slotted penalty opened the game a bit, after resilient defending by the dutch until that point of the game. Barcelona defender van der Gragt's high boot caught USA striker Alex Morgan as French referee Stephanie Frappart called for penalty after assessing replays for a while.

This is USA's consecutive World Cup win and third consecutive final appearance. USA had previously won titles in 1991, 1999 and 2015, before winning yet another World Cup this year.

Rapinoe's goal also meant that she won the Golden Boot after finishing with six goals and three assists, while simultaneously winning the Golden ball award as well.
