Earlier, after winning the toss, DC captain Shreyas Iyer opted to bat first and soon his decision back-fired as in-form Prithvi Shaw was sent back to Pavillion for a golden duck.
And soon India's Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahanae became Jofra Archer's second victim as DC was left reeling at 10 for two in 2-3 overs.
Following two early dismissals, Iyer along with Dhawan took charge of Delhi's innings as the duo snitched 85 runs for the third wicket.
Shreyas Gopal gave Rajasthan a much-needed breakthrough in the 12th over by removing Dhawan from the attack. Dhawan scored a blistering 57 runs off 33 balls with the help of six fours and two sixes.
In-form Marcus Stoinis joined his skipper Iyer in the middle in the 12th over and the took charge of DC's innings. The duo added 37 runs for the fourth wicket and just when they started to do damage control for DC, young Kartik Tyagi gave RR another breakthrough by dismissing Iyer.
Iyer scored 53 runs off 43 balls with the help of three fours and two sixes.
Stoinis and Alex Carey scored 18 and 14 runs respectively, while Axar Patel added seven runs for DC.
Jofra Archer (3/19) and Jaydev Unadkat (2/32) were the most successful bowlers for Royals.
Brief Scores: DC 161/7 (Shikhar Dhawan 57 off 33 balls, Shreyas Iyer 53 off 43 balls, Jofra Archer 3/19, Jaydev Unadkat 2/19).
