Melbourne: Former Australian vice-captain David Warner and right-arm pacer Sean Abbott have been ruled out of Boxing Day Test against India due to injuries.

However, both Warner and Abbott are expected to rejoin the Aussie team ahead of the third Test.

According to the reports, Warner is still recovering from a groin injury that he sustained in the second ODI against India. However, Abbott has recovered from his injury that he sustained during a warm-up match against India.

  • It has been confirmed that the groin injury will keep star opener, David Warner, out of the Boxing Day Test as well 🤕

"Warner and Abbott spent time in Sydney outside the team's bio-secure hub to recover from injury. While neither player has been in a specific 'hotspot' as outlined by NSW Health, Cricket Australia's bio-security protocols do not allow them to rejoin the squad in time for the Boxing Day Test," a Cricket Australia release stated.

"The pair travelled from Sydney to Melbourne to continue their rehabilitation given the changing public health situation in Sydney at the time," the release added.

The duo flew to Melbourne ahead of schedule after a COVID-19 outbreak in Sydney.

And if the rumours are to be believed then the Sydney Test, which begins on January 7, could be scrapped due to the fresh COVID-19 outbreak. And Cricket Australia could be forced to conduct back to back games in Melbourne.

The Boxing Day Test between India and Australia starts on December 26 in Melbourne.
